In fact, you’ll be amazed at how many dental problems a dental crown in Harrisburg can correct. This is one thing your dentist keeps up their sleeve! Keep reading to discover more about this magic dental restoration that can be used in a variety of restorative and cosmetic services.

Getting a Dental Crown is Super Easy!

If you’re considering getting a dental crown, don’t worry it’s simple. You can have a dental crown placed in just a few office visits.

At your first appointment, your dentist will prepare your tooth to support your dental crown.  If the reason you’re getting a crown is because a tooth is severely damaged or broken, your dentist may speak with you about building your tooth back up to support the crown.

After the tooth is stable enough to place the dental crown, impressions and measurements of the affected area will swiftly sent to a dental lab. The lab will then create your very own personalized crown according to the information we collect. While you’re waiting for your custom crown to be sent back, your dentist can place a temporary crown. This way, patients don’t have to face discomfort.

As soon as your custom crown is created, you’ll return to your local dental practice to have your restoration permanently placed.

Maintain Your Dental Crown for Years to Come

When you’re waiting to have your permanent crown placed, it’s important to still care for the temporary one.  These foods can damage your temporary crown:

  • Hard candies
  • Nuts
  • Crunchy fresh vegetables (carrots, celery, etc.)
  • Sticky deserts
  • Chewing gum

Even after getting your permanent crown placed, there are some foods that could make your mouth feel funny, like a slight twinge. Tooth sensitivity is common, especially right after a crown has been placed. Although these substances will not harm your dental restoration, if you feel uncomfortable eating them, try to eliminate them from your diet:

  • Hot foods like soup or coffee can cause teeth with crowns to feel sensitive, especially if you originally got your dental crown because you experienced gum recession.
  • Cold foods like ice cream can trigger sensitivity the same way that hot foods can.
  • Sugary foods and sticky candy should be avoided for the benefit of your smile in the first place, but especially when you have dental crowns. The sugar can cause decay around or beneath your crown. Also, sticky foods can damage your dental crowns.

Great, now you’re a dental crown expert! If you would like to move forward with your restoration or need additional maintenance help, reach out to your dentist.
