Much of their concern has arisen from a recent study which has been quoted on local and national tv programs.<\/p>\n<p>The American Dental Association has issued the following statement on this study:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The ADA Division of Science has carefully reviewed the study and notes some weaknesses in the study design and interpretation of the results:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The findings are based on patient recall of X-rays taken years ago and people\u2019s memories can be unreliable.<\/li>\n<li>Advances in X-ray technology\u2014equipment improvements, faster film speeds and digital imaging\u2014have successfully reduced radiation exposure.<\/li>\n<li>The study was observational, meaning it cannot establish a cause-and-effect relationship between dental X-rays and meningioma.<\/li>\n<li>The results of the study did not appear to be dose-related as would be expected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Considering these weaknesses and the small size of the reported effect, this study shouldn\u2019t raise significant concerns. However, it\u2019s a good reminder that dental X-rays should be taken only when the dentist expects the diagnostic yield to affect patient care.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many patients have voiced their concerns recently about dental radiographs or x-rays.
